Brent Samaritans volunteer honoured by Brent Council

11th May 2011

Diana King, a volunteer at Brent Samaritans for 28 years, has had her outstanding service to the people of Brent recognised by Brent Council. Diana received her 'Community Champion' award from Brent's mayor at a ceremony on 11th May 2011.

When she joined us back in 1983, people could only contact Samaritans by phone or by visiting a branch in person. Nowadays, volunteers offer support via email and text messaging too, and Diana has taken the new technology in her stride, welcoming the opportunity to reach many more people who might need the service. In addition to her listening duties, Diana has also found time to help with the training of prospective volunteers, and acts as a mentor to many of her less experienced colleagues. And if that isn't enough, she has helped to raise thousands of pounds for the branch by doing everything from singing Christmas carols at tube stations to tin-rattling at Brent Cross.

Diana said: "I'm so touched to be honoured in this way, but I don't feel special at all! I think that the whole branch should be getting an award, not just me. Choosing to volunteer with Samaritans all those years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made. It's a privilege to be able to give truly confidential emotional support to people in crisis, and the sense of cameraderie and mutual support among the volunteers is wonderful."

Brent Branch Director, Leila 1476, said, "We are all so proud of Diana and delighted that her long and loyal service to the people of Brent has been recognised. Although we think Diana is extra-special, we also believe that everyone has it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer, and we are always on the lookout for more people. There are roles available to suit people with all kinds of skills - from taking calls to the helpline, to providing administrative and IT support or fundraising. Brent Samaritans is a rewarding place to volunteer, as not only do we offer expert training but you get to meet and work with some truly exceptional people - like Diana!"
